Mammoth Mountain ski area was founded in 1953 by Dave McCoy after receiving a permit from the Forest Service to develop the Mountain and surrounding area for skiing. As a hydrographer for the City of Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, McCoy recognized Mammoth's ability to receive and hold more snowfall than the surrounding peaks. After operating a make-shift rope tow on McGee Mountain for the preceding decade, McCoy jumped at the opportunity to move and expand the lift operations to Mammoth Mountain. He then applied for a small bank loan, gathered up a group of skiers to help him build the lift system, and Mammoth Mountain ski area was born.
In June 1996, after 43 years of sole ownership in Mammoth and June Mountain ski areas, Dave McCoy sold a 33% interest to Intrawest Corporation, which included all of the surrounding real estate owned by Mammoth Mountain Ski Area. Intrawest later increased their partnership interest to 58% and began developing The Village at Mammoth, Sierra Star golf course and real estate, and Juniper Springs Resort.
In 2005, McCoy sold Mammoth Mountain to Starwood Capital Group, who owned the Mountain and holdings until 2017. Mammoth Resorts, which also includes Bear Mountain Resorts in Southern California, announced its sale by Starwood to a partnership of Aspen Skiing Company and KSL Capital Partners, later named Alterra Mountain Company. Alterra Mountain Company was established in 2018 and is privately owned by KSL Capital Partners and Henry Crown and Company, the owners of Aspen and Snowmass. Alterra is a conglomerate of many ski resorts that offers a combined season pass called the "Ikon Pass". If you are seeking a luxury development in the center of it all, the Mammoth Real Estate market will soon include the opportunity to purchase only 15 Limelight luxury residences with construction completed slated for late 2025. The Little Nell Hotel Group, which is owned by Aspen Skiing Company has formed "Aspen Hospitality" which will run the hotel operations of the Limelight Hotel. This development is sure to be the most luxurious hotel and residences in town!
